The Lilly Fellows Program supports Regional and single-campus Conferences on topics that advance its mission of deepening the connections between Christianity and the academic vocation. Regional Conferences and Workshops are intended to widen the national discussion of church-related higher education issues through focus on topics of special significance to faculty, administrators, and students at a particular institution or group of institutions, or matters of special intellectual concern to faculty and others in Christian higher education.
All institutions of the LFP National Network are eligible to apply for a Regional or single-campus Conference. The National Network Board has established criteria for all proposals submitted.
The Conference or Workshop:
• must promote the goals and mission of the Lilly Fellows Program
in Humanities and the Arts.
• must be hosted by a member or members of the LFP National Network
of Church-Related Colleges and Universities.
• may include participants from outside the Network.
• may include only participants from a single Network institution.
• can not be sponsored by an institution that has held such an event
within the previous three years.
The total funding available for Regional Conferences and Workshops for the 2005-2006 academic year is $20,000 with two institutions awarded $10,000 each. It is expected that in many cases the host institution or group of institutions will also contribute to funding the conference.
The focus, character, and constituency of the conference may vary to suit the needs of the applicant, within the general guidelines listed above. Previous successful conferences and workshops have focused on issues facing schools in a particular region, topics of current debate among faculty at a particular school, student life issues, graduate student matters, various theological or denominational traditions in higher education, an array of topics in liberal and professional education, and civic intersections and relationships.
The application for a Regional Conference or Workshop must include a statement of 300-500 words describing rationale and goals for the proposed event. Proposals must also include the intended theme, format, speakers, likely audiences, and projected number of participants. A proposed budget and projected dates and schedule must also be included. One person from the host institution must be designated as Conference Coordinator. At the conclusion of the Conference the Coordinator is asked to submit a brief written report on the event.
Applicants are encouraged to contact recent hosts of previous Conferences and Workshops for information on preparing proposals, developing publicity, and the like. Application deadline is September 15 of each year.
