Third National Research Conference and
the 2003 Image Conference
A Narratable World: The Theological Implications of Story
Seattle Pacific University, Seattle, Washington
November 6-9, 2003
Plenary Speakers:
Doris Betts, Alumni Distinguished Professor (Emerita), University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; author of nine novels, including Souls Raised from the Dead;
Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School;
Roger Lundin, Clyde W. Kilby Professor of English, Wheaton College.
Organized by Image: A Journal of the Arts and Religion under the auspices of the Seattle Pacific University Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development, and supported by a grant from the Lilly Fellows Program, this conference will explore the theme of narrative from a Judeo-Christian perspective. A wide range of academic disciplines will be reflected in the program.
Call for Papers:
This announcement invites contributed papers for concurrent sessions. The Lilly Fellows Program has offered funding to support presenters who are faculty or students from Lilly Network institutions, but presenters from other institutions are also welcome. You may propose a paper individually, or as part of a group proposal on a focused topic (3-4 papers). Because the implications of narratives are numerous and diverse, nearly all disciplines will have something to contribute; therefore, in addition to disciplines within the humanities, scholarship from both the social and natural sciences is welcome. The conference especially encourages discussion on:
the role of narrative in different theological traditions at various points in their history;
how ideas about narrative can link Christianity and the academic disciplines;
the potential for Christian ideas about narrative to enrich secular thinking about the sciences and humanities, as well as other realms of thought;
pedagogical possibilities for centering classroom teaching around narrative approaches to the curriculum.
Abstracts of contributed papers should be submitted by April 1, 2003, should be 300 to 700 words and include title, author(s), mailing address, e-mail address, text of abstract, and position. Decisions on abstracts will be sent by April 30, 2003. Send abstracts to conference@imagejournal.org or by mail to:
