Description and Guidelines
The annual LFP National Research Conference provides a forum for research and scholarship among faculty at Network institutions and feature topics that advance the goals and mission of the Lilly Fellows Program. Conferences foster and promote research that addresses issues of faith and learning, Christian practices of teaching, the relationship of religion and the academic disciplines, the relationship of the sacred and the secular, or other aspects of church-related higher education. Research Conferences strengthen the community of academic faculty with and among of LFP National Network of church-related schools by drawing together scholars at those schools to address specific topics from different disciplines and approaches. Topics of previous Research Conferences are listed under those previously funded.
Each conference will address a compelling issue of interest to a wide range of faculty members at Network schools. Conferences will be held on the campus of a Network college or university and organized by one or two faculty members at the host school. Conference organizers will be responsible for identifying the conference topic, creating the schedule, soliciting speakers for the plenary sessions, calling for papers and establishing adjudication procedures for selecting presenters, promoting and publicizing the conference at Network institutions, and arranging for food, lodging, and other logistics.
Specific Guidelines
Each conference will include two major components: 1) plenary sessions featuring speakers with national reputations who address the conference theme; and 2) sessions and panels featuring papers by faculty members from Network colleges and universities on specific aspects of the conference topic. It is strongly recommended that the number of concurrent sessions be limited so that most participants are able to attend each session. 3) In order to foster community, 33% of all sessions must be devoted to conversation among speakers and audience, and there should be a 4:1 ratio of planned to unplanned time. 4) There must be a balance between humanities and the arts in programming. LFP must be clearly identified on all conference materials. It is anticipated that in many cases the host institution or another organization may also contribute to funding the conference.
Additional guidelines for proposals:
1. The conference should be designed to encourage the participation of faculty, particularly junior faculty, from Network schools. To this end, money should be budgeted to reimburse in part or in whole travel, food, and lodging expenses for 20-40 non-presenting participants from network schools.
2. Proposals should indicate how Network institutions will be featured in the conference and should incorporate campus tours and showcase campus programs and facilities.
3. If other sources of funding are being sought, the proposal should indicate the amount of such funding and its potential impact on the character of the conference.
4. Proposals should indicate how the conference will be publicized on Network campuses.
5. Proposals should indicate who the plenary speakers would be, and whether they have been invited and/or confirmed.
6. Conferences should be two or three days in length.
7. Date of Conference must be approved by the LFP Staff.
8. Submit the name and contact information for an experienced conference planner at the host institution; include a letter of agreement from this planner that he/she will be involved at all points in the logistics of the conference.
9. In order to receive funding, Coordinators must sign an agreement statement at the time of the grant agreeing to the above conditions of the conference, and then sign a second agreement 14 months prior to the conference confirming that the following has been accomplished: (1) Conference Web Site Up and Running; (2) Promotional materials are designed and available for distribution to LFP Network Schools; (3) Call for Papers is prepared and ready to be issued, (4) major speakers are secured, and (5) facilities and lodging are under contract for use.
10. It is strongly recommended that research conference designers consult with the Lilly Fellows Program Staff during the development process.
The Lilly Fellows Program awards $83,500 for the conference. The proposal must include a budget whose categories may vary according to institutional and conference needs. The following is a sample budget:
•Honoraria, travel, and lodging for plenary speakers (3 @ $2500) $7,500
•Honoraria for presenters (20@ $500) $10,000
•Food, lodging, and travel for participants (110 @ $500) $55,000
•Stipend for Coordinator $2,000
•Promotion and publicity $2,000
•Conference staff and facilities $5,000
•Discretionary Fund $2,000
TOTAL $83,500
